Watch for a generic alternative
When the patent expires on a brand-name drug, a generic version may soon become available—with the same performance as the brand-name, but at a fraction of the cost.
Currently, there are about 1,200 FDA-approved generic drugs on the market—with more being added all the time. 8 in 10 prescriptions filled in the U.S. are for generic drugs. [Source: fda.gov]
So, if you take a brand-name drug, ask your pharmacist if there is a generic alternative. And keep asking every time you get a refill…you never know when a substitute will become available!
