Take Charge of Your Own Health

Do you want to feel empowered to make informed health care decisions about your own mind and body? Start by thinking of your health care provider as your partner— instead of relying on him or her to tell you what to do.

Partner With Your Doctor for Best Results

Here are five tips to make the most of every minute your provider spends with you during an appointment:

  1. Be clear. Describe your symptoms factually, quickly, and without unnecessary details. Sometimes symptoms aren’t being ignored by the doctor, they’re just lost in a long list.
  2. Be persistent. If your provider dismisses your concern, don’t give up. Ask questions like, “What do you think it could be?” or “What do I do if these symptoms get worse?”
  3. Be proactive. Get a second opinion if your doctor recommends surgery, you have a major diagnosis (like cancer or a chronic condition), or you feel uncomfortable with your options.
  4. Be invested. Know your own health risks and take steps to reduce them. Make sure you get preventive services and regular dental and vision exams.
  5. Be informed. Ask your doctor for resources (specialists, programs, websites, videos, etc.) to help you manage any health conditions you have.
